🎮 On Our Radar: The Video Game Cinema Boom Hitting Peak Level in 2027

Could 2027 become the most significant year in video game adaptation history? An unprecedented lineup of major gaming franchises is headed to theaters, suggesting that Hollywood has finally cracked the code on interactive entertainment properties.

The roster for 2027 reads like a gamer's dream: a live-action Legend of Zelda film, Sonic The Hedgehog 4, the Minecraft Movie sequel, a Death Stranding adaptation, and the Horizon Zero Dawn movie. That's before factoring in potential releases like the Alex Garland-directed Elden Ring film currently in pre-production, plus dozen-plus other gaming adaptations in various stages of development.

This lineup rivals the previous high-water mark of 2016, which brought Warcraft, Assassin's Creed, and Ratchet & Clank to theaters. The key difference? Today's adaptations are backed by proven theatrical successes. Recent hits like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the Sonic franchise have demonstrated real box office viability, with studios now viewing gaming IP as seriously as comic book properties.

Major developers are taking notice and doubling down. Nintendo reorganized a subsidiary specifically to handle film-related business after Mario's theatrical success, while Capcom has produced 21 film adaptations since 1994 and shows no signs of slowing. As Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto puts it, "Games eventually stop running when newer versions come out, but films remain forever."

What makes this wave particularly interesting is the cross-generational appeal of gaming franchises. Unlike properties tied to specific age demographics, games like Zelda and Sonic span multiple generations, creating nostalgia-driven viewership that translates into game repurchases and merchandise sales. As Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto notes, "Games eventually stop running when newer versions come out, but films remain forever." This permanence creates a synergistic cycle where films continuously funnel audiences back to gaming properties.

We're watching this trend closely as 2027 approaches. Will this landmark year prove that video game adaptations have finally achieved parity with comic book franchises as Hollywood's most reliable IP? The answer could reshape the entertainment industry strategy for decades to come.

Assault at TwitchCon Raises Safety Concerns for Streamers

A man assaulted popular streamer Emily “Emiru” Beth Schunk at TwitchCon San Diego on Friday, grabbing her face and attempting to kiss her during a meet-and-greet before her personal security guard intervened. The incident has intensified concerns about safety protocols at the annual livestreaming convention.

Emiru, who has nearly 2 million Twitch followers, criticized the platform for inadequate security response. She wrote that TwitchCon staff "did not react and let the guy walk away" and disputed Twitch's claim of immediate action, saying her assailant was caught only after her manager pressed event staff hours later. She said Twitch initially planned only a 30-day ban for her assailant before she pushed for an indefinite ban.

Twitch ultimately banned the individual indefinitely and announced increased security measures, including no longer allowing attendees to bring guests to meet-and-greets and adding security personnel around participating streamers.

The assault follows safety concerns raised by prominent female streamers including Imane “Pokimane” Anys and Rachell “Valkyrae” Marie Hofstetter, who skipped this year's convention citing fears about safety at scheduled appearances. Their concerns intensified after Japanese streamer Airi Sato was stabbed to death by a viewer earlier this year.
