Welcome to another Pixel P&L edition. This issue takes 4 minutes to read.

If you only have one, here are the 5 most important things:

  • Ubisoft reports €159 million loss despite 'Assassin's Creed: Shadows' success — full breakdown below.

  • India is developing its first indigenous GPU prototype by year-end.

  • Electronic Arts mandates office return, phases out remote work over 3-24 months.

Let's get into it.

Ubisoft Swings to Loss Despite 'Assassin's Creed' Success

French video game publisher Ubisoft reported a €159 million ($178 million) net loss for fiscal 2024-25 on Wednesday, despite strong performance from its latest "Assassin's Creed: Shadows" title, as underperforming releases and industry headwinds pressured the company's finances.

Revenue fell 17.5% to €1.9 billion ($2.12 billion), while the company's preferred "net bookings" metric dropped more than 20% to €1.8 billion ($2.01 billion). The disappointing results follow a brief return to profitability in the previous fiscal year.

"This year has been a challenging one for Ubisoft, with mixed dynamics across our portfolio, amid intense industry competition," CEO Yves Guillemot said.

The company's much-anticipated "Star Wars Outlaws" failed to meet sales expectations, while its multiplayer shooter "XDefiant" was canceled entirely. However, "Assassin's Creed Shadows," released in March, has attracted over three million players and ranks as the second-best-selling game in the U.S. this year.

Ubisoft has restructured to address its financial struggles, creating a subsidiary valued at €4 billion for its top franchises, with Chinese tech giant Tencent investing €1.16 billion ($1.29 billion) for a 25% stake. Additional cost-cutting measures include studio closures and reduced hiring, with Guillemot confirming the company is replacing only one in three departing employees.

The publisher's stock has declined 12% since January, reaching decade-low prices in April.

🔧 On Our Radar: India's First Indigenous GPU Venture

Is India taking its first steps toward semiconductor independence in one of tech's most complex arenas? According to Moneycontrol, The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) is set to unveil the country's first homegrown GPU prototype by year-end, with 29 initial "1xK" units marking a significant milestone for India's tech ambitions.

While this represents an important first step in domestic semiconductor development, these initial chips face a long road to gaming relevance. Unlike consumer-focused products, these first-generation GPUs will likely target basic computational applications and specialized workloads rather than the demanding requirements of modern gaming. The technical gap between these prototypes and current gaming GPUs from industry leaders is substantial. Even Intel, an established chip-making powerhouse, faced multiple challenges breaking into the gaming GPU market with its ARC GPUs despite its vast resources and expertise.

Unfortunately, India’s gaming audience will continue relying on imported hardware for high-performance gaming experiences while domestic chip development matures. For now, we're watching this space closely as India's semiconductor strategy develops.

Will these early GPU prototypes eventually make their way into gaming applications, or will they remain focused on the AI computational workloads they seem to be targeting at the moment?

Despite winning numerous "Game of the Year" awards, Ōkami was recognized in the 2010 Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition as the "least commercially successful winner of a game of the year award." The critically acclaimed title had sold fewer than 600,000 copies by March 2009, with its poor commercial performance contributing to the closure of developer Clover Studios. However, the game's legacy endured. Later re-releases across multiple platforms eventually helped Ōkami surpass 3.3 million copies sold by 2023, and in 2018, it earned another Guinness World Record as the "Most critically acclaimed video game starring an animal character."
