Pixel P&L: Two Gaming Giants, Two Big Moves

Welcome to another Pixel P&L edition. This issue takes 6 minutes to read. If you only have one, here are the 5 most important things:

  • Xbox's leadership transition turned into public chaos when leaks forced Microsoft to announce early.

  • Krafton names its first Chief AI Officer while posting record revenues, signaling deeper AI push across PUBG and future titles.

  • Roblox responds to Los Angeles County’s lawsuit over child safety failures.

  • Rainbow Six Mobile finally goes global after nearly three years in soft launch, despite earning just $1.1 million in lifetime revenue.

  • Xbox co-founder Seamus Blackley says Microsoft is "sunsetting" Xbox, calling new CEO Asha Sharma "a palliative care doctor".

Let's get into it.

Inside Xbox's Chaotic Leadership Transition

Microsoft's announcement of its Xbox leadership overhaul on Friday unraveled faster than planned, and the fallout inside the company was immediate, according to current and former Microsoft employees who spoke to The Verge.

The news was supposed to break Monday. However, Microsoft moved it up after details began leaking. That left Xbox teams learning about the shake-up through news alerts rather than internal memos, a reversal of the order any communications team would want.

The disorder was visible in the details. A LinkedIn post from Sarah Bond's account, inviting feedback on Xbox accessibility features, went live minutes before her departure was announced. It stayed up for hours. Bond's farewell memo to staff arrived well after the public announcement and was never included in Microsoft's official blog. Of the four internal memos circulated that day, three from Satya Nadella, Matt Booty, and incoming CEO Asha Sharma mentioned Phil Spencer warmly. None mentioned Bond.

Current and former employees told The Verge the friction had been building for months. Bond's "Xbox everywhere" strategy, which pushed cloud and mobile over console, had faced repeated internal pushback. Her attempt to reframe Xbox as a platform-agnostic service produced campaigns that confused employees and consumers alike. The "This is an Xbox" push, which positioned phones and tablets as Xbox devices, drew particular resentment inside the company. An Xbox mobile gaming store Bond announced in mid-2024 still does not exist.

Xbox hardware revenue has fallen for three straight fiscal years. Several employees told The Verge they were relieved by her exit, though most credited her skill in brokering partnerships with outside developers and companies.

Spencer's own departure had been an open secret inside the company since early last year, when he took an extended vacation and left teams waiting weeks for approvals on routine decisions. Rumors of his retirement circulated widely enough that Microsoft issued a denial in July, stating he would not be leaving "anytime soon."

Krafton Names First Chief AI Officer as PUBG Publisher Posts Record Revenue

Krafton, the South Korean publisher behind PUBG, has named Kangwook Lee as its first chief AI officer, a move that signals a deeper push into artificial intelligence as the company reports record revenues.

Lee, who joined Krafton in 2022 as head of its AI division, has authored 57 papers accepted at conferences including NeurIPS, ICML, and ICLR. His work at the company includes a collaboration with Nvidia to develop what Krafton calls "co-playable characters," AI companions that interact with players in real time.

In his new role, Lee will oversee AI research across three areas: gameplay development, operational efficiency, and what the company describes as new growth opportunities.

The appointment comes as Krafton posted its strongest financial results to date. Full-year 2025 revenue crossed $2.05 billion for the first time, up 22.8% year over year, driven largely by its PUBG franchise. Operating profit reached $717.5 million.

Ubisoft's Rainbow Six Mobile Goes Global After Nearly Three Years

Ubisoft launched Rainbow Six Mobile worldwide on Monday, ending a soft launch that began in Canada in August 2023. The game ships with seven maps, 20 operators, and three game modes. Despite beta tests, a seven-month hiatus in 2024 to fix bugs, and phased rollouts, the title has earned $1.1 million in lifetime revenue heading into its global debut.

Vantage Studios Names Leadership Team for Assassin's Creed

Tencent-backed Ubisoft subsidiary Vantage Studios that houses Assassin's Creed has appointed three franchise veterans to lead the brand. Martin Schelling takes charge of strategy, Jean Guesdon returns as Head of Content after a prior stint in the same role, and François de Billy will oversee production. All three have worked together across multiple Assassin's Creed titles.

Roblox Disputes LA County Lawsuit Over Child Safety

Los Angeles County sued Roblox on Sunday, alleging the platform exposes children to grooming, exploitation, and sexually explicit content while prioritizing profit over safety. The county is seeking civil penalties of up to $2,500 per day per violation. Roblox called the claims inaccurate and said it would defend against the lawsuit, citing existing safeguards and cooperation with law enforcement.

🤣Laugh:

📺 Watch: A new John Wick game was just announced, but this breakdown explains why it faces an uphill battle. The films are structured like power fantasies, but here’s why replicating "Gun Fu" balletic flow in real-time code is brutally hard.

🎮 Play: Climber Animals: Together is a physics-driven platformer where falling from the top means starting over—no checkpoints, no mercy. Controls feel intentionally slippery, momentum matters more than precision, and multiplayer turns every climb into shared chaos where friends accidentally sabotage your jumps. Brutally punishing solo, hilariously rewarding with others.

📚 Read: Xbox co-founder Seamus Blackley says Microsoft is "sunsetting" Xbox and the new CEO is "a palliative care doctor who slides Xbox gently into the night in this candid interview with Gamesbeat." Asha Sharma's AI background over gaming experience signals where Microsoft's priorities lie: generative AI, not auteur-driven game development. Blackley urges her to talk to Shuhei Yoshida, Peter Moore, and Reggie, or leave the job if she can't develop passion for games. Brutal honesty from inside the original Xbox team.

💡Did You Know

Mario travels roughly 3.4 miles to rescue Princess Peach in the original Super Mario Bros. Scale his pixel height to a real human (using a 26-inch stance as the baseline), measure Ian Albert's stitched level maps, and that's your number. He also swims about 371 meters along the way, or seven and a half laps in an Olympic pool. Factor in every bonus area and the total creeps up to 3.7 miles. All those hours of jumping, dying, and being told the princess is in another castle? Basically a 5K run.

"I never cared about justice, and I don't recall ever calling myself a hero... I have always only fought for the people I believe in. I won't hesitate... if an enemy appears in front of me, I will destroy it!"
