Pixel P&L: Nvidia's AI Filter is Making Developers Angry

Welcome to another Pixel P&L edition. This issue takes 6 minutes to read. If you only have one, here are the 5 most important things:
Nvidia's DLSS 5 sparked backlash from game developers who say the AI filter overrides artistic intent.
The Saudi Crown Prince's investment firm bought a 5% stake in Capcom, adding to the kingdom's gaming portfolio.
A court ordered Krafton to reinstate the Subnautica 2 studio chief it fired, ruling the publisher tried to dodge a $250M bonus.
GDC Festival of Gaming saw its lowest turnout since 2011, down 30% from last year.
Google Play launched cross-platform purchases and game trials.
Let's get into it.
Nvidia's DLSS 5 Draws Fire From Developers Over AI-Altered Game Visuals
Nvidia on Monday announced DLSS 5, the next generation of its image-enhancement technology, which uses an AI model to add what the company calls "photoreal lighting and materials" to supported games. The feature, due this fall, takes a game's color and motion data as input and reconstructs scenes with altered lighting and surface detail.
The announcement drew sharp criticism from game developers. Steve Karolewics, a rendering engineer at Respawn, called it "an overbearing contrast, sharpness, and airbrush filter," saying he would stick with original artistic intent. Concept artist Jeff Talbot was blunter, calling DLSS 5 "just a garbage AI filter" that strips art direction from every shot it touches.
Nvidia said developers can tune intensity, color, and masking per game. Publishers including Bethesda, Capcom, Ubisoft, and Tencent have signed on. Bethesda later said its art teams would be "further adjusting" the effect on Starfield.
Saudi Crown Prince's Investment Firm Acquires 5% Stake in Capcom
Mohammed bin Salman's Electronic Gaming Development Company has acquired 26.8 million shares of Capcom, amounting to a 5.03% stake in the Japanese game developer, according to Gamebiz. Founded in 2020 through the Crown Prince's MiSK Foundation, EGDC is best known for acquiring 96% of SNK Corporation in 2022, the studio behind Fatal Fury and King of Fighters, and has since grown that stake to 100%.
The Capcom purchase is separate from a 5% stake Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund bought in the company in 2022, bringing the kingdom's combined exposure to roughly 10%. EGDC said the acquisition is for "pure investment" purposes, targeting capital gains and dividends.
The deal is part of a broader Saudi push into the games industry that includes a proposed $55 billion acquisition of Electronic Arts by the Public Investment Fund, which would give the fund a 93.4% ownership stake if concluded by mid-2026.

Court Orders Krafton to Reinstate Fired Subnautica 2 Studio Chief
A judge ordered Krafton to restore Ted Gill as CEO of Unknown Worlds, ruling the publisher breached its contract by firing Gill and two co-founders without valid cause. The court found Krafton's real motive was avoiding a $250 million bonus tied to Subnautica 2's early access performance. The eligibility window for that payout now runs through September 15. Krafton said it disagrees with the ruling.
Google Play Adds Cross-Platform Purchases and Game Trials
Google Play introduced a "buy once, play anywhere" pricing model and game trials at GDC Festival of Gaming, targeting the 160 million players on its You tab. Select paid titles, including Dungeon Clawler and the Reigns series, are now purchasable once across mobile and PC. Trials let players access full paid games at no cost, with progress carrying over on purchase.
Xbox's Gaming Copilot AI Is Coming to Current-Gen Consoles This Year
Microsoft plans to expand its Gaming Copilot assistant to current-generation Xbox hardware in 2025, Xbox product manager Sonali Yadav said at GDC. The feature, which launched in beta on PC, mobile, and the ROG Xbox Ally, lets players ask an AI assistant for tips, game recommendations, and account history.
GDC Festival of Gaming Draws Lowest Attendance Since 2011
The rebranded GDC Festival of Gaming drew 20,000 attendees this year, a 30% drop from 2024's record 30,000-plus. GamesIndustry.biz reports that high attendance costs and U.S. immigration concerns kept visitors away, with some companies redirecting budgets to Develop Brighton and Tokyo Game Show.

📺 Watch: Watch the Sekiro: No Defeat anime trailer because the animation quality is genuinely shocking, way better than anyone expected. Based on Shadows Die Twice, it seems like the anime follows the shinobi bound by Dragon's Blood navigating a collapsing world. If Sekiro meant anything to you, this trailer proves the adaptation might actually deliver.
🎮 Play: Dice With Death is the perfect "after hours" game, challenging enough to pull you out of work-mode but simple enough when you're mentally taxed. Pixel art nails the vibe. If you need something between mindless scrolling and committing to a 3-hour session, this scratches that exact itch.
📚 Read: Robert Yang got hacked in Dark Souls 2 and injected with 500 cursed Black Knight Ultra Greatswords that crashed his inventory every time he opened it. To fix it, he downloaded Cheat Engine, embraced the darkness, and became the hacker he feared. Then he tracked down his hacker to thank him. A love letter to DS2's broken netcode, FromSoftware's abandoned anti-cheat, and the freedom that comes from having nothing left to lose.

A creator named Littlejem built a life-size animatronic version of the creature from Resident Evil: Requiem in just nine days. Starting from an existing Halloween animatronic, they used PVC pipes, wire, cardboard, and expanding foam to shape the body before airbrushing the final details. The jaw moves, giving it just enough motion to feel unsettling without veering into full horror-movie territory. Littlejem also put together a Grace cosplay using materials already in their workshop. The whole project was documented across two Instagram reels, giving followers a front-row seat to the build process.
