Newzoo Boosts 2025 Games Industry Revenue Forecast to $188.9 Billion

The global videogames industry is projected to generate $188.9 billion in revenue this year, marking a 3.4% increase from 2024, according to market research firm Newzoo's revised forecast.

The updated projection represents an upward adjustment from Newzoo's earlier estimate of $186.1 billion made earlier this year. The firm expects the industry to surpass $200 billion by 2027, growing at a compound annual rate of 3.3%.

Mobile gaming continues to dominate, with revenues expected to reach $103.1 billion in 2025, up 2.9% year-over-year. Newzoo projects mobile gaming will hit $107.7 billion by 2027.

The firm also revised its 2024 estimates upward, now saying the industry generated $182.7 billion last year, compared to its previous forecast of $177.9 billion. China's gaming market outperformed expectations with 5.6% growth in 2024.

Regulatory changes including Europe's Digital Markets Act are reshaping game distribution, though Newzoo expects these shifts to redistribute rather than significantly increase overall spending.

Young Americans Slash Video Game Purchases as Financial Pressures Mount

Young Americans are cutting back on video game purchases as economic pressures intensify, according to market research firm Circana (via WSJ). Weekly spending on video games by 18- to 24-year-olds fell 20-25% year-over-year in April 2025, amid job market struggles, student loan payments, and rising credit card delinquency rates. The decline reflects broader spending cuts by young consumers across leisure categories, with gaming among the hardest hit sectors.

💡Did You Know

In 2001, Nintendo released the Pokemon Mini, the smallest handheld game console ever made by the company. This tiny device, measuring just 3.1 inches long, was designed exclusively for Pokemon-themed mini-games. The console featured a monochrome LCD screen, infrared communication, and a built-in shock sensor that could detect when players shook the device.

Only ten games were released for the system, including "Pokemon Party Mini" and "Pokemon Pinball Mini." The console was primarily sold in Japan and North America, with limited European availability. Despite its novelty, the Pokemon Mini was discontinued in 2002 due to poor sales, making it one of Nintendo's shortest-lived gaming platforms.
