Pixel P&L: Meghalaya Turns Music Into an Economic Engine

While cities like New York and Los Angeles struggle with rising venue costs and oversaturated markets, a remote state in northeastern India quietly generated a 500% return on investment from just seven concerts. Now every neighboring state is frantically copying their "build it and they will come" playbook, because apparently the future of live music isn't in oversaturated markets but in other places.

Meghalaya's Concert Tourism Generates Five-Fold Return on Investment

Northeastern Indian state Meghalaya reportedly generated revenue of INR 133.5 crore ($16 million) from seven major concerts last year against an investment of INR 23.5 crore($2.73 million), delivering more than five times return on investment, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said, according to The Telegraph India.

The concerts, featuring global artists including Akon, Bryan Adams and DJ R3HAB, attracted 386,000 fans over 13 days and created 5,500 jobs daily, Sangma said while launching the third season of the state's music initiative.

The financial success has sparked regional competition, with neighboring Assam approving its own concert tourism policy in May. "Developing a concert economy in Assam," Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma posted on social media, announcing plans for "world-class" venues.

Meghalaya announced two upcoming concerts featuring Jason Derulo and Irish rock band The Script for November's Cherry Blossom Festival. The state's grassroots music program has expanded from 3.5 crore rupees to 69 crore rupees, supporting over 5,400 artists.

Microsoft Plans Major Job Cuts at Xbox Gaming Division

Microsoft Corp. is preparing to conduct another round of significant layoffs at its Xbox gaming division next week, according to a Bloomberg report, marking the fourth major workforce reduction at the unit in 18 months.

The cuts are expected to affect employees across the entire Xbox organization as part of a broader company-wide restructuring, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing internal plans. Microsoft declined to comment.

The gaming division has faced mounting pressure from Microsoft executives to improve profit margins following the company's $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard Inc., which closed in 2023. Xbox produces video-game hardware, software and operates gaming services.

Microsoft typically implements major organizational changes near the end of its fiscal year, which concludes June 30. The company previously announced plans to cut thousands of jobs next week, primarily in sales divisions.

🎮 On Our Radar: Gaming Café Chains Eye Saudi Arabia's Growing Market

Could gaming cafes be the next franchise format to benefit from Saudi Arabia's entertainment sector investments? True Gamers' decision to open four new venues in Riyadh suggests that international gaming cafe operators are starting to see real opportunity in the Kingdom's evolving consumer landscape.

The Dubai-based company, which operates 15 locations across the UAE, is betting that Saudi Arabia's young demographic and increasing urban entertainment spending will translate into sustainable business for gaming venues. This marks their second Saudi expansion after an earlier franchise deal in Mecca, indicating they're testing market response before committing to larger rollouts.

Unlike traditional gaming café markets that developed organically around existing PC gaming cultures, Saudi Arabia represents a more structured opportunity where operators can establish themselves alongside government initiatives rather than having to build consumer habits from scratch.

The timing also coincides with Saudi Arabia's $13 billion gaming sector investment plan, though it remains to be seen how much of that funding will directly benefit private operators versus state-owned initiatives. The government's target of creating 39,000 gaming jobs suggests there's anticipated demand, but the success of ventures like True Gamers will likely depend more on local consumer adoption than policy support.

We're tracking how this expansion performs, particularly whether the franchise model can scale effectively in Saudi Arabia's retail environment. Will gaming cafés find the same traction in Riyadh that they've achieved in Dubai and other regional markets? The answer could influence how other international gaming operators approach the Saudi market.
