India's IT Minister Meets Gaming Industry After Swift Ban on Real-Money Games

Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw convened with online gaming executives on September 1 to discuss implementation of India's sweeping new gaming legislation.

The closed-door meeting addressed the government's strategy to promote esports and social gaming platforms while ensuring an orderly transition away from real-money gaming operations, which were banned under the recently enacted law.

Online Money Gaming industry representatives reportedly assured officials they were already winding down prohibited activities and collaborating with payment processors to ensure compliance, sources said. The discussions also covered measures to protect user funds during the transition period.

The consultation follows Parliament's rapid passage of the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, which received presidential approval. The law prohibits real-money gaming while establishing a central regulatory authority for permitted formats including competitive esports.

🎮 On Our Radar: Hollow Knight Silksong's Bold Pricing Strategy

Could a $19.99 price tag actually revolutionize an entire industry? While analysts predict GTA 6 could break new ground with a $100 price point and potentially push the entire industry toward premium pricing, Team Cherry's highly anticipated Hollow Knight: Silksong is conducting the opposite experiment at just $19.99, only $5 more than its 2017 predecessor.

This pricing decision comes at a pivotal moment when consumer spending on games faces increasing pressure from inflation and economic uncertainty. Despite being arguably the most anticipated indie game of all time, with six years of fervent fan anticipation, Team Cherry is essentially testing whether exceptional quality at accessible prices can drive better long-term revenue than high-margin strategies.

What makes this particularly fascinating is the potential for two major releases to pull the industry in completely opposite directions. While GTA 6's predicted pricing could normalize $100 games, Silksong's restrained approach echoes successful models from studios like Supergiant Games, where modest launch prices paired with exceptional quality generate sustained sales success.

We're watching this launch closely, particularly how its sales performance might influence pricing strategies industry-wide. Will Silksong prove that accessible pricing can be the ultimate competitive advantage?
