Indian Budget 2026 Backs Gaming Talent Push With 15,000 School Labs

India will set up animation and gaming labs in 15,000 schools and 500 colleges to address a looming talent gap in its creative technology sector, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced on Sunday. The budget did not specify the total allocation for the program or implementation timeline.

The initiative, part of the Union Budget 2026-27, will be executed through the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies in Mumbai. The government projects India will need 2 million professionals in animation, visual effects, gaming and comics by 2030.

"The government's backing of IICT reflects a clear commitment to equipping young Indians with future-ready skills," said Akshat Rathee, co-founder of NODWIN Gaming, which specializes in youth culture, esports, and gaming, particularly in emerging markets. The company requires skilled talent for immersive experiences and sees the labs expanding the talent pool.

Animesh Agarwal, founder of S8UL Esports, said the 2 million target "highlights both the scale of the opportunity and the responsibility on industry and institutions to prepare future-ready talent."

Hardware makers see demand rising for high-performance computing in schools. "Realizing this vision calls for access to computing environments that match global benchmarks," said Vishal Parekh, chief operating officer of CyberPowerPC India.

Sagar Nair, who runs the LVL Zero incubator for gaming startups, said success depends on connecting education to entrepreneurship. "When skilling is paired with incubation and clear pathways to entrepreneurship, India can cultivate a generation of creators equipped to build original intellectual property," he said.

Nitish Mittersain, joint managing director of Nazara Technologies, said the budget's focus is "a very positive step" that could help India build original intellectual property and become a global hub for gaming. "This is not just about employment—it's about creating original Indian IP," he said.
