Supreme Court to Hear Online Money Gaming Ban Challenge in January 2026
India's Supreme Court will hear constitutional challenges to the Online Gaming Law in January 2026, marking the first substantive arguments since money gaming companies filed petitions seeking the ban's suspension.
Chief Justice Surya Kant directed a three-judge bench to examine pleas from operators contesting the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025, which prohibits online money games and imposes imprisonment and fines for violations. The law took effect October 1, 2025.
Money gaming firms argue the legislation collapses the legally established distinction between skill-based and chance-based games, violating trade rights and threatening a sector with substantial investment. Companies claim forced operational suspensions caused "irreversible harm" without interim protection.
The Act introduced blanket prohibition on online money gaming following governmental concerns about addiction and financial damage. Previous court proceedings directed the Centre to file comprehensive responses.
The consolidated petitions entering the Supreme Court review represent the legal framework's decisive phase, with thousands of jobs and significant capital deployment at stake across India's money gaming industry.
Dream Sports Restructures Into Eight Independent Units Following Gaming Ban
Dream Sports divided into eight standalone businesses following India's August real-money gaming prohibition that eliminated 95 percent of revenue and total profits, founder Harsh Jain disclosed at Dream11's relaunch event.
The restructuring spans sports content platform FanCode, cricket game studio Dream Cricket, AI analytics unit Dream Sports AI, fintech arm Dream Money, and philanthropic division Dream Sports Foundation. Each operates independently with dedicated leadership and potential external funding while Dream Sports retains majority ownership.
The company redistributed 800 of Dream11's 1,000-employee workforce across units, with senior executives including CTO Amit Sharma and CPO Rahul Mirchandani assuming CEO roles. Dream11 relaunched as a creator-led sports entertainment platform featuring livestreams and free-to-play fantasy sports.
Jain maintained the no-layoff commitment despite revenue collapse, citing 3-4 year operational runway. The firm relocated headquarters from Bandra Kurla Complex to Worli in January 2026.
Dream Sports, valued at $8 billion in 2021, generated Rs 6,384 crore revenue in FY23 with Rs 188 crore profit before the regulatory disruption.
Microsoft continues reassessing its video game pricing strategy following customer resistance to higher launch costs, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty told Variety.
The company reversed course in July after backlash against an $80 price tag for The Outer Worlds 2, ultimately releasing Obsidian's sci-fi RPG at $69.99. Booty emphasized meeting consumer expectations while maintaining business viability.
"Our whole focus is on delivering player satisfaction and player value," Booty said, noting monetization now occurs across multiple channels rather than solely upfront purchases.
Xbox joins broader industry pricing debates. Nintendo defended its $80 Mario Kart World price point for Switch 2's launch, while analysts projected Grand Theft Auto VI could reach $100.
Booty also addressed Call of Duty: Black Ops 7's performance, calling it among Xbox's most-played titles despite Activision's decision to abandon annual releases following apparent commercial underperformance.
"Shipping a major franchise like clockwork every year is a really difficult task," Booty said, highlighting seasonal content delivery as the franchise's competitive advantage.
