Pixel P&L: Gaming M&A Hits Post-Pandemic High in Q1 2026

Welcome to another Pixel P&L edition. This issue takes 5 minutes to read. If you only have one, here are the 5 most important things:

  • Console revenue hit a record $21.7 billion in Q1 2026 and M&A reached $7.7 billion across 52 deals, the highest post-pandemic quarterly deal value.

  • Sony launches The Playerbase, a program that scans selected fans' likenesses and places them as characters in PlayStation Studios games — Gran Turismo 7 is first.

  • Yoshihisa Kishimoto, creator of Double Dragon and the belt-scrolling beat 'em up genre, passed away on April 2 at 64.

  • Street Fighter 6 is the final title added to the Esports Nations Cup 2026 lineup, set for Riyadh from November 18–22 with 24 nations competing.

  • Quantic Lab exits Embracer Group and returns to founder ownership, effective April 1.

Let's get into it.

Gaming M&A Hits Post-Pandemic High as Console Market Sets Revenue Record

The global video game industry posted record console revenue of $21.7 billion in the first quarter of 2026, driven by Nintendo Switch 2's first holiday cycle, which more than offset year-over-year declines at PlayStation and Xbox, according to a market update by investment bank Aream & Co.

Gaming M&A reached $7.7 billion across 52 transactions in Q1, the highest quarterly deal value in the post-pandemic period, excluding the Activision Blizzard and EA transactions. Savvy Games Group's roughly $6 billion acquisition of mobile publisher Moonton accounted for the bulk of that figure. Mid-market activity was equally strong, with Q1 marking the most active quarter for $100 million-plus gaming content deals since the pandemic boom.

Private funding told a different story. Early-stage deal count fell to 43 rounds, its lowest level in recent years, as public gaming stocks declined across all segments amid broader macroeconomic pressure and uncertainty over AI's impact on the sector.

PlayStation Launches Fan-to-Character Program for Gran Turismo 7

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced The Playerbase, a community program that will scan selected fans' likenesses and place them as characters inside PlayStation Studios games. The first title in the program is Gran Turismo 7, with applications opening April 7.

Players from select markets across the Americas, Europe, Asia, South Africa, and Australia can apply through PlayStation's website. Applicants must sign in with a PlayStation account and answer qualifying questions. Finalists will be invited to video interviews, with one fan ultimately chosen to visit Sony's visual arts studio in Los Angeles for a full likeness scan.

The selected player will appear as an in-game character portrait in Gran Turismo 7, and will collaborate with a designer to create a custom logo and vehicle livery added permanently to the game's Showcase menu. Sony said additional PlayStation Studios titles and more fan slots will be added as the program expands.

The announcement follows the shutdown of PlayStation Stars, Sony's loyalty program, which was discontinued roughly a year ago.

📺 Watch: The Two and a Half Gamers podcast breaks down how Lily's Garden runs its ad monetization with Tactile Games and Lumit. If you're building a mobile game with ads or trying to understand why top-grossing puzzle games print money without cannibalizing their IAP, this is a rare case of practitioners actually explaining how the sausage gets made.

🎮 Play: STONKS-9800 is a text-based 80s Japanese stock market simulator that sounds niche and looks simple, and then somehow eats 10 hours of your day. You're buying stocks, managing real estate, running a company, betting on horses, playing pachinko, and occasionally ending up in the hospital for overworking. Cozy until it isn't, stressful in the best way, and the kind of game that's hard to put down once it clicks.

📚 Read:Esquire Singapore's AI-generated interview with One Piece actor Mackenyu is a fascinating but weird read, less because of what it says and more because of what it is. The magazine couldn't get the interview, so they fed his old quotes into a chatbot, published the output as if he'd said it, and framed the whole thing as creative problem-solving. A chatbot laughing, reflecting on fatherhood, and sharing feelings about a deceased parent it never knew, published under a real person's name in a major magazine. It's the most casually dystopian thing you'll read this week.

When Undead Labs revealed State of Decay 3, the game barely existed. Studio head Philip Holt recently admitted on the Sunny Games podcast that the CGI trailer, produced by animation studio Blur, was pure concept work made by a team of four or five people, with no actual game in development. "The game was in a Word document," Holt said. The zombie deer that appeared in that trailer won't make it into the final game. An alpha playtest is now scheduled for May 2026, nearly six years after that first announcement.
