Pixel P&L: Gaming Can Now be Considered as Self-Care and Career Prep

Welcome to another Pixel P&L edition. This issue takes 5 minutes to read. If you only have one, here are the 5 most important things:

  • A new ESA study reveals gamers aren't just playing for fun: 77% use games to reduce stress and half say gaming advanced their careers.

  • Marvel Rivals hemorrhages 85% of its player base in under ten months.

  • Battlefield 6 storms Steam with 747K concurrent players, while EA confirms zero AI-generated content in the final game.

  • Destiny 2 player count crashes below its 2018 crisis levels when Bungie nearly shut down the game.

  • Netflix partners with Indian organizations to build animation and gaming talent through scholarships and curriculum design.

Let's get into it.

Video Games Emerge as Tool for Stress Management, Career Development

A majority of gamers play for reasons beyond pure enjoyment, according to a new Entertainment Software Association report that found only 66% cite fun as their primary motivation.

The ESA's 2025 Global Power of Play survey reveals mental health benefits drive gameplay, with 77% of players worldwide reporting reduced stress, 70% experiencing less anxiety, and 64% feeling decreased loneliness through gaming connections.

Players also recognize cognitive advantages, with 77% globally believing games enhance creativity and 76% citing improved problem-solving skills. Half of respondents say gaming advanced their professional education, while 43% credit games with influencing their career trajectory.

The study found gaming strengthens family bonds, particularly among parents. Globally, 55% of players report improved relationships with children, with 68% gaming together monthly. Among younger players aged 16-35, two-thirds have formed close friendships or romantic relationships through gaming.

Marvel Rivals Loses 85% of Player Base Since January Peak

NetEase's Marvel Rivals is struggling to retain players despite an explosive launch, with Steam data showing concurrent users plummeting from 644,000 in January to 96,000 this week.

The superhero shooter's 85% decline in under ten months contrasts sharply with established competitors. Apex Legends, by comparison, nearly tripled its player count during a similar post-launch period, growing from 117,000 to 330,000 players between November 2020 and August 2021.

While 98,000 concurrent players remains healthy by industry standards, the persistent downward trajectory raises questions about Marvel Rivals' long-term viability as a live-service title, particularly given its high production costs and aggressive monthly character release schedule.

This suggests that the rapid development pace may be contributing to balance issues, with new characters launching over- or under-powered. Other industry observers speculate that players who initially left established shooters have simply returned to familiar titles in an intensely competitive market where retaining audiences proves far more difficult than attracting them.

Destiny 2 Player Count Falls Below 2018 Crisis Level

Destiny 2's daily player count has dropped below 300,000 across all platforms, falling beneath 2018's Curse of Osiris expansion lows when Bungie said it was "five weeks away from shuttering" the game. Current figures from community tracking site popularity.report that tracks Destiny 2’s total player population (via the Bungie API) show mid-300,000 daily players, compared to over 400,000 during the 2018 crisis that nearly ended the live-service shooter.

Electronic Arts' Battlefield 6 achieved third place on Steam's most-played games chart hours after release, with 747,000 concurrent players on the platform alone, surpassing its open beta peak by 220,000. 📜 Quote of the Day

"When I was a girl, I dreamt of standing in a room, looking at a girl who was and was not myself, who stood looking at another girl who was and was not myself. My mother took this as a nightmare. I saw it as the beginning of a career in physics."
