/ Epic Games Faces Lawsuit Over Alleged Deceptive Fortnite Practices

Epic Games is facing a proposed class action lawsuit from two parents who claim the company used deceptive tactics in Fortnite’s Item Shop. Filed in a San Francisco court, the lawsuit accuses Epic of misleading players by displaying countdown timers that falsely suggested limited-time offers. According to the complaint, items often remained available at the same discounted price after the timers expired.

The lawsuit follows a 2024 ruling by Dutch regulators that fined Epic €1.1 million for similar practices. Epic disputes the claims, stating it removed countdown timers last year and introduced enhanced parental controls to safeguard younger players. The company maintains that its purchasing system includes clear opt-in features and refund options.

The court will now decide whether the case qualifies for class action status. The outcome could have wider implications for monetization practices in live-service games, especially those catering to younger audiences.

💡 Did You Know?

Did you know there was once a controller that was three feet wide with over 40 buttons? The Steel Battalion controller for the original Xbox was a massive, cockpit-style peripheral featuring two full-sized joysticks, three foot pedals, and multiple levers. Designed to mimic a mech pilot's controls, it included everything from gear shifts and radar toggles to a windshield wiper switch. Its standout feature? A guarded eject button — miss it during a critical moment, and your pilot would die permanently in the game. The controller was so complex it only worked with Steel Battalion and its multiplayer sequel.
