Saudi Arabia's Esports World Cup Announces 2026 Lineup
The Esports World Cup Foundation unveiled 20 of 24 titles for its 2026 tournament, maintaining its ambitious push to dominate competitive gaming.
The lineup includes industry stalwarts like Counter-Strike 2, League of Legends, and Dota 2, alongside shooters Call of Duty and VALORANT. Notable omissions from 2025 include StarCraft 2, Tekken, and Rocket League.
The Foundation emphasized its "strategic approach," featuring games across shooters, battle royales, MOBAs, and fighting games. Multi-year partnerships with publishers including Activision Blizzard, Riot Games, and Valve underpin the selection.
Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund holds stakes in several participating publishers, including SNK, EA, Activision Blizzard, and Capcom, illustrating the kingdom's deepening ties to gaming through its Vision 2030 diversification strategy.
The 2026 event will again take place in Riyadh next summer, following this year's tournament that drew millions of viewers globally. Four additional titles remain to be announced.
Supercell CEO Warns EU Rules Could Harm Gaming Industry
Supercell CEO Ikka Paananen cautioned that proposed European Union regulations could devastate the continent's $31 billion video game sector.
In an open letter, Paananen argued the Digital Fairness Act and Consumer Protection Cooperation guidelines risk over-regulating in-game economies. The rules could transform routine gameplay mechanics into bureaucratic processes, he warned.
"Every time a player uses an in-game token, which happens millions of times daily and works just like tokens at a theme park, companies would need to treat every such use as a distinct financial transaction requiring extensive legal processes," Paananen wrote.
Supercell, creator of Clash of Clans with 5 billion downloads and 250 million monthly players, exemplifies European gaming success. The Finnish company celebrates its 15th anniversary this year.
The proposed regulations target deceptive monetization and manipulative design, particularly in children's apps. However, Paananen advocates for strengthening existing frameworks rather than implementing sweeping new rules that could disrupt free-to-play models across Europe's gaming landscape.

India's Game Developers Form Policy Body
The Game Developer Association of India established a Policy Secretariat to engage with the government on industry regulations, appointing Hemant Coomar as director of government affairs. The move follows Parliament's passage of the Online Gaming Act 2025, which created a regulatory authority under the Information and Broadcasting Ministry. GDAI Chairman Sridhar Muppidi said the secretariat will advocate for regulations distinguishing social games from money-based gaming while supporting India's position as a global development hub.
Nintendo Seeks $4.5 Million From Alleged Switch Pirate
Nintendo of America is pursuing $4.5 million in damages against Redditor James C. Williams, accused of pirating Switch games and distributing circumvention software. The company filed its request in the U.S. District Court after Williams allegedly became "combative and uncooperative" following a March 2024 cease-and-desist letter. Nintendo won a default judgment in July after Williams failed to appear in court, claiming his activities damaged the company and its publishing partners.
Mobile Gaming Revenue Set to Hit $126 Billion
Global mobile game revenue will reach $126 billion in 2025, according to Xsolla's Q2 report, driven by hybrid monetization and direct-to-consumer strategies following the Apple-Epic settlement. Developers can now retain up to 95% of revenue by steering players to web shops instead of paying 30% platform fees. Over 70% of studios blend in-app purchases, ads, and subscriptions, though just 1.9% of new games surpass $1 million lifetime revenue amid fierce competition.
Tamil Nadu Hosts India's First State-Backed Global Esports Championship
Tamil Nadu will host the Chennai Esports Global Championship in November, featuring Counter-Strike 2 and Battlegrounds Mobile India tournaments with combined prize pools exceeding $100,000. The government-backed initiative, envisioned by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, marks India's first state-sponsored international esports event. The CS2 tournament qualifies for Valve Regional Standings, drawing teams from India, Southeast Asia, and Europe. Officials aim to establish Chennai as a global esports hub while creating opportunities in broadcasting and content creation.

To promote Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag Ubisoft funded the exhumation, DNA testing, and facial reconstruction of Amaro Pargo, a legendary 18th-century Spanish corsair from Tenerife. Pargo, who lived from 1678 to 1747, accumulated vast wealth as a privateer during the War of Spanish Succession. According to a Ubisoft supervisor, Pargo was "a character who in his time had the same reputation and popularity as Blackbeard or Francis Drake." Scientists extracted DNA from his remains and created a detailed facial reconstruction, giving us the first glimpse of this notorious pirate's actual appearance. It was a brilliant marketing campaign that blurred the lines between gaming and history.
