Epic Games Unveils Unreal Engine 6, With Rocket League As Its First Title

Epic Games has announced Unreal Engine 6, the next version of its game-development technology, and named Rocket League as the first title built on it.

The reveal came during the Rocket League Paris Major this weekend, where Epic debuted a minute-long trailer for what it called "the next era of Rocket League." The footage ran in real-time on UE6, which carries a new purple logo. Epic disclosed no further details about the engine or the updated game.

The current Rocket League runs on UE3, technology more than two decades old. UE6 arrives four years after UE5, which powers titles including Epic's own Fortnite.

The engine is expected to support games for the next console generation. Xbox has confirmed its next system, codenamed Project Helix, will reach developers in 2027, and separate reports suggest Sony is targeting a similar window for the PlayStation 6.

Nintendo Targets 20 Million Switch 2 Units as Production Ramps

Nintendo plans to produce 20 million Switch 2 consoles by March 2027, roughly 20% above the sales figure it gave investors earlier this month, according to Bloomberg.

In its financial results posted in early May, the Kyoto-based company said it expected to sell 16.5 million Switch 2 units in the business year ending April 2027, down from the 19.86 million it sold the previous year.

The production target points to a wider gap between Nintendo's public forecast and its internal expectations. "For them, there is no real downside in lowballing numbers first and then surpassing them later," analyst Serkan Toto told Bloomberg.

Nintendo also confirmed price increases this month. From September 1, the US price of the Switch 2 rises $50 to $499.99, with comparable increases in Europe and Canada. Japan price revisions take effect next week.

They argue about whether AI will actually reduce development costs, that venture investors will assume it does regardless, and trying to dodge the question in a pitch room is worse than having a real answer.

The color-coded shelving system is subtle enough that figuring it out feels earned, and the achievement structure is smarter than most: a chaotic run where you shelve everything wrong plays completely differently from a no-magic run where you slow down to a crawl.

Smith's answer on creative focus, specifically that the hardest part of development was cutting material rather than finding it, is a useful data point for anyone managing a long-running licensed property where the canon keeps expanding faster than any single product can contain it.

💡Did You Know

An hour of fast-paced action gaming right before bed might lower stress and sharpen certain memory skills the next day, rather than wrecking your sleep. In a recent experiment, adults who do not normally play video games spent an hour gaming in the evening, and researchers found no decline in their objective sleep quality afterward. Participants also reported lower stress and performed better on specific memory tasks the following morning. The work pushes back on the common assumption that screen time before bed is uniformly bad.
