EA Nears $50 Billion Private-Equity Deal in Gaming's Largest Buyout
Electronic Arts, the video-game publisher behind "Madden NFL" and "EA FC," is close to agreeing to a $50 billion leveraged buyout that would mark the largest deal of its kind, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The consortium includes private-equity firm Silver Lake, Affinity Partners, and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. The Saudi sovereign wealth fund, which already owns nearly 10% of EA, provides most of Affinity's capital.
The potential acquisition represents the kingdom's latest push into gaming as part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's strategy to diversify the oil-dependent economy. Since launching Savvy Games Group in 2021, the PIF has accumulated stakes in Activision Blizzard, Take-Two Interactive and Nintendo.
EA shares surged 15% Friday following initial reports of the deal talks. The Redwood City, Calif.-based company, which has traded publicly since 1990, could announce an agreement as early as next week, the people said.
India Gaming Body Rebrands Amid Esports Push, Faces Implementation Hurdles
The Confederation of Indian Industry's gaming arm, established in 2018 as the Indian Digital Gaming Society, will now operate as the Indian Digital Gaming & Esports Society. Officials announced the change at an annual meeting attended by 60 delegates from government and industry.
The rebrand reflects growing interest in competitive gaming as viewership increases and policymakers differentiate esports from online gambling. However, the sector remains fragmented, with multiple tournament organizers and regulatory bodies operating simultaneously.
The society also unveiled plans for a INR 500 crore ($60 million) fund and an "India Gaming Mission" with the Information & Broadcasting Ministry. Key implementation details, including timelines and resource allocation, remain undetermined.

Trump Orders TikTok Sale to U.S. Investors in $14 Billion Deal

Vice President Vance said Chinese officials initially resisted but agreed after discussions. Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping approved the plan following their conversation. Call of Duty's origins trace back to a creative rebellion against EA's corporate control. In the early 2000s, a small team of developers working on the acclaimed Medal of Honor series grew frustrated with EA's increasing micromanagement and creative restrictions. Led by key figures from the Medal of Honor team, these developers broke away to form Infinity Ward in 2002. Their goal was simple: create the World War II shooter they truly wanted to make, free from corporate interference. The result was the original Call of Duty in 2003, which not only rivaled their former franchise but ultimately surpassed it, launching one of gaming's most successful series.Retry
