Pixel P&L: BGIS 2025 Records Solid Viewership in Kolkata

When gaming analysts began writing obituaries for Battlegrounds Mobile India last quarter, they clearly forgot to check the patient's pulse. Last week, nearly 470,000 concurrent viewers tuned in to watch Team Versatile claim victory in the BGIS 2025 finals, essentially serving those premature death notices right back to the critics. In an industry obsessed with "the next big thing," BGMI's resilience proves that battle royale isn't just about survival in-game, it's about outlasting the skeptics in the real world too.

Battlegrounds Mobile India Series 2025 Concludes with Solid Viewership

The Battlegrounds Mobile India Series 2025 concluded Sunday with peak viewership exceeding 469,000 concurrent users on the Hindi stream alone, solidifying its position among India's elite esports tournaments. Only two previous BGMI events have recorded higher audience numbers.

Team Versatile claimed the championship at Kolkata's Biswa Bangla Mela Prangan, with member Tarushika "SHEEK" making history as the first female professional to win a BGMI LAN tournament. The victory earned the team ₹69.6 lakh ($81,513).

This year's competition featured a substantially increased prize pool of ₹3.21 crore ($375,945), bolstered by an additional ₹1.21 crore from in-game purchases.

The competitive calendar continues with the Battlegrounds Mobile India Pro Series 2025, beginning its online phase May 22. The upcoming tournament offers a ₹2 crore prize pool, with finals scheduled for July in New Delhi.

🎮 On Our Radar: Riot's Losses in LCK

South Korea's premier League of Legends circuit, the LCK, has reported cumulative losses of $29.5 million since 2022. While these figures make for attention-grabbing headlines suggesting imminent collapse, the reality isn't all doom and gloom.

Last year, Riot waived approximately 33% of franchise fees (equivalent to $22.8 million) and replaced the revenue-sharing model with fixed support payments totaling around $9 million to participating teams. This change significantly reduced LCK's revenue but provided teams with financial stability independent of viewership fluctuations.

By absorbing these revenue hits and subsidizing team operations, Riot is prioritizing the long-term health of its competitive ecosystem over short-term financial performance. Riot can afford this approach since LCK’s parent company, Riot Games Korea, remains profitable with a $32.6 million operating profit on $305.9 million in sales in 2024, with core game revenues actually increasing by 2.1%.

We're watching closely to see if this strategy of calculated revenue sacrifice creates a more sustainable model or indicates fundamental challenges in esports economics that even industry leaders cannot easily solve.
